Texting while driving Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Texting while driving - Research Paper ExampleDespite the best efforts from the break up of governments and law enforcement agencies, there was a 28 per centum increase in the number of accidents over the period from 2005 to 2008. Many people accept the fact that they repeat to use cell call in while driving a practice that takes away many lives and that makes many people incapacitated for their entire lives. It is surprising to note that in sharp contradiction with the popular belief, it is adults who are more likely to resort to texting while driving. According to the a Pew Research Centre study, 47 percent of adults do this while only 34 percent teenagers admit doing the same (Distraction.gov). When police officers find it easy to catch those who talk on phone while driving, it is difficult for them to find those who are texting. It is generally pointed out that enforcement of a texting ban is not an easy task as it requires officers to identify an act that commonly takes p lace in a drivers lap. Despite all these issues associated with the use of mobile while driving, it is rather ironic to note that the car manufacturers are not paying any attention to this issue at all. Instead, they are preparing their next generation vehicles with more entertainment. To illustrate, Ford rolls out Twitter and Pandora as a part of their dashboard console entertainment an invitation card to disasters. It seems that despite the large numbers of accidents, people do not fully understand the graveness of the problem, or are unwilling to mend their ways as they are addicted to mobile. A study conducted by the Virginia tech Transportation Institute (cnet. News) found that those who organise text message while driving are twenty-three times more likely to have a crash than the non-distracted drivers (LeBeau). However, the study found a much lesser possibility of accident when the driver is talking on a phone. In this case, the possibility of accident is 1.3 times higher t han that of a non-distracted driver. At this juncture, it seems useful to look into the NHTSA study that reveals that 80 percent of crashes and 60 percent of near-crashes are the result of some sort of driver beguilement. According to the study, the principal forms of distraction while driving are cell phone use, trying to handle moving objects inside the vehicle, giving attention to another event outside the vehicle, breeding while driving, and trying to apply makeup. According to experts, texting is more dangerous than talking on phone. According to studies, drivers who resort to text messaging take 400 percent more time off the road. In addition, they are 70 percent less likely to keep proper lane. While the driver who talks on phone is able to watch the road, the one who is texting has to look at his or her hands, thus, unable to watch the road ahead. Despite all these frightening facts, people do not seem to change their habits. As reported by Bruno (in USA Today), the reason is simple in the opinion of James Katz, director of the Center for unstable Communications at the Rutgers University. According to him, it is basic human nature to believe that they can handle a situation better than others even when they are mindful of the dangers involved. As Pittman (66) points out, it is not possible for the US citizens to easily forget the 2008 train disaster that killed 25 people and injured 138 people. In the accident, a Metrolink Commuter stop collided with a Union Pacific freight train. According

Elastic Clause of the US Constitution Assignment

Elastic Clause of the US Constitution - Assignment ExampleImplied powers are those powers given to congress by expression 1, Section 8, clause 18, of the Constitution that is not specific totallyy named but is provided for by the necessary and veracious clause (p. 45). Accordingly, the necessary and proper clause exists to afford these implied powers to Congress in order to make sure the federal government has the power to carry out the laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying into Execution the foregoing Powers, and all other Powers vested by this Constitution in the Government of the United States (p. 44). This clause is problematic for many because it falls along the Federalist/Anti-Federalist divide and the contemporary Conservative/ informal divide. However, the problem with the necessary and proper clause is not with its controversial and contentious nature, but with the fact that it is vague, ambiguous, and is designed for subjective interpretations and applica tions of Constitutional law.The phrase necessary and proper in clause 18 of Article 1, Section 8 entitles Congress to make laws that extend beyond what the Constitution enumerates in the previous 17 clauses of that Section. This is interpreted to be a relationship between an end-goal and the means of achieving that goal (Engdahl, 2011). The end-goal must be a necessity for the achievement of the purpose of a government, which include the fundamental law of a more perfect Union and the establishment of Justice (US Constitution, 1787). These ends are the explicit goals of the enumerated powers in a similar vein, the implied powers are given only as they are necessary and proper to exercise the enumerated powers. This interpretation of the necessary and proper clause is based on the context in which it appears. Coming after 17 enumerated powers, the final clause specifies that the Congress is able to make laws that ensure the foregoing powers (namely, the enumerated powers) can be ex ercised sufficiently. In other words, the eighteenth clause of Section 8 does not give a blank check to Congress to make any rules or regulations it feels like passing. Rather, the expansion of implied powers must always be taken in necessary and proper reference to one of the enumerated powers.

Establishing scientific academies and credibility Research Paper

Establishing scientific academies and credibility - Research Paper ExampleRhetoric conveying authority Dears 1985 greenback of the establishment of the Royal Society turned on the inter lean between rhetoric and authority during this period. He called this period of the emergence of scientific societies between 1650 and 1660 as declarative mood of the consolidation of the Scientific Revolution. At this time, science practitioners with similar views about scientific inquiry formed groups which stand as testimony to a new place toward knowledge of nature (Dear, 1985). The institutionalisation of scientific inquiry was a sign of the changing attitude of society towards the knowledge of nature. The establishment of the Royal Society in particular(a) was the focal point that marked the end of the change process. The new attitude towards the pursuit of indispensable knowledge was shaped by the disciplines that were established during the Scientific Revolution. The discourse forwards the thesis that early scientific reporting employed rhetoric to convey authority pursuant to the convention of the period, which is separate and distinct from the truth sight in the scientific inquiry itself. ... In his treatise, Dear described a report submitted by Newton in 1666 on a prism experiment, art it a fabrication. It turned out that the series of experiments were genuine and their results were valid and relevant, but the description of the experiments were cast in a form that made the reputation more acceptable for publication. The paper also highlights the contrast between the Old Learning and the New Learning (Rangachari, 1994). The very title of the piece was an ironic play on the motto of the Royal Society. Nullius in Verba was Latin for Take nobodys expression for it, referring to the stringent standards of scientific study. Totius Verba is the opposite, meaning to Take everybodys word for it. Linguistic style and virtual witnessing. The thesis advanced by Shapin (1984) is that knowledge about reality is shaped by the speech in which such natural reality is couched. The language used is also the key to securing agreement of the scientific community to the knowledge discovered, and of differentiating the new discoveries from former theories that were accorded mediocre status. Shapin observed that there was a way of communicating that accords a greater credibility to the report than would have otherwise been attributed to it had it been reported in a more regular communicating style. peculiar(prenominal) observations were made concerning the effective use of language to convey more than the scientific findings arrived at. For instance, accounts of experiments were replete with rich detail, the purpose of which was to build in the mind of the reader a picture of the execution of an experimental procedure at which they were not physically present to personally witness. The SEU scheme presumes that actors make choices within limited constant options. The model further accounts that subsequent choices are inbred to each other. The scheme strongly defies the concept of actors rational choice. Therefore, the model treats human being as objects swayed by internal forces into following a certa in route. This driving force is accountable for the decision made. However, assumptions presented by the models do not depict the situation in the ground. According to Machina 2005 (32), the decision-making environment is not required presented with limited choices. Importantly, sorting out options available for a certain case is virtually unpractical. Failing to account for individuals rational thinking is the major limitation presented by this model. Bounded rationality defines actors cognitive limitations influenced by knowledge and examination ability. Studies have engaged effectual experiments challenging SEU theory under bounded rationality ideas. The SEU theory has failed to support its postulates in cases of downing one of its assumptions (Mansor, Tayles, & Pike 2012). Second, theatricalism is a style of playwriting in which the literary work consists of an intense language. That is to say, the language used in the plays that are produced in theatricalism is dramatically pompous. In Kushners Angels in America -- this play is an example of theatricalism -- its lines are utterly grandiose, if not bombastic. The main protagonist named Prior, in fact, speaks a heightened language Each angel is an infinite aggregate myriad entity, theyre basically incredibly powerful bureaucrats ... (26). Obviously, the adjectives here are utterly in like manner much. Finally, Arnold categorizes the notion of theatricalism as different from the praxis of naturalism. Perhaps the vivid imagery and heightened language prominent in theatricalism make such style of playwriting as unreal. Realism, in the general sense, is a s tyle of writing in which it attempts to create or probably recreate the appearance of life as it is undergo by man. Further, realism tackles the kind of life that is common in the day-to-day basis. Human Belief System Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Human Belief System - Essay ExampleBruce focuses on the new biology kn stimulate as epi inherited, which shows how the postcode and consciousness are critical in changing life on earth as DNA and chemistry (Lipton 69). He brings his clarity, insight and humor unveiling how we perceive things including 1. How thought and emotion controls the character of every cell. 2. Quantum physics and life 3. Cooperation and evolution and these are supported by following quote In fact, exactly five percent of cancer and heart suffering patients can associate their disease suffering to being passed on from parents to siblings. While the mediums of communication made a big excitement upon the discovery of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 breast cancer genes, they failed to criticize critically that 95% of breast tumor are non caused by genetic literal passed on parents to siblings. The tendency of a medical condition in a significant number of cancer patients is derived from environmentally leads to epigene tic alterations and not intercepted DNA. (Lipton, pg 72) Among the refuters of Lipton ideas is the selfish gene which is a book on evolution which builds its principal on adaptation and natural selection theory. The name expresses the gene view of evolution where it follows that two or to a greater extent individuals are genetically related and that makes them behave selflessly with each other. The selfish gene concept is proficient at explaining many forms of altruism. An organism is expected to bourgeon so as to maximize its inclusive fitness thus a number of its copies are passed on globally, this make the population to evolve toward evolutionary constant strategy. He proposes the idea of initial molecule that multiplied itself and survived over the other genes. Gene combination helps an organism to survive and to reproduce thus improving genes own chances of being inherited. As a result, those that succeed will be beneficial to the organism. Genes can reproduce each other at t he expense of the organism, and thus indicant struggle is limited. (Dawkin, 112) Explains that the selfish gene can be subtle gene, and its world revolves on savage competition, ruthless exploitation and deceit. The act of apparent altruism does not exist in nature he explain how a bee will sting and die to protect the hive and birds risks their life to warn the flock of an go up hawk thus providing an explanation that its the selection that favors gene that promotes cooperation among them (P.30). This happened to the point that communal nature of a colonyidentical genesis for all intents and purposes unrecognizable. This theory of selective genes is interchangeable to the theory of evolution According to the Charles Darwin he held an opinion that life is similar. Therefore, there are descendants who originate from a common ancestor have the comparable characteristics and thus presumes that development of life is purely natural and modified with descent. He explains the concept of natural selection where it seeks to preserve and accumulate minor and advantageous genetic mutation (Charles 162). A good demonstration is where an individual inherits a negative gene, and in turn passes on to his or her descendants these inferior members of the same base will be disadvantageous and thus will be outlived by the superior ones who exhibit positive genes as inherited by them. Therefore from the in a higher place it shows that this theory refutes Lipton since cell control the

Globalization and Local cultures Essay Example for Free

Globalization and Local cultures EssayThe present scenario represents a highly dynamic environment, where trans guinea pig advertising, globalization and local culture are found to be closely linked with each other. This essay discusses and critically evaluates much or less of the major issues that are entang lead in the relationship mingled with transnational advertising, globalization and local culture. Issues Some of the hearty issues that are linked with transnational advertising, globalization and local cultures are as follow ? CommunicationAs a result of globalization, the need for transnational advertising in an legal manner has increased. Globalization has led to the proliferation of capacious summate of products and it is through advertising lonesome(prenominal) that the consumer can be made aware of the uniqueness present in the product. Transnational advertising requires creativity along with the whole step of being magnificent depending on the firm. Critica l evaluation The critical evaluation of the issue of communication depicts that advertising should be based on the proper search and well planned groundwork.Advertising should communicate a specific message to target audience in a persuasive and believable manner and as well it should non hamper the cultural value of targeted audience and others (Fowles 1996). Globalization has prompted the evolution of advertising agencies, which conduct market research for the clients. Market research deals with the commercial accommodation of standard social science methods in a qualitative and quantitative manner, which should be interpreted in a rea heelic form.Production of advertisement should not be restricted to just as a business relation between the agency and client rather its content and practices must be subjected to some self regulatory codes. For instance, cigarette advertising on TV and radio, magazines and newspaper is banned due to federal acts. On the other hand, lack of repr esentation of large number in the advertising of cigarette is the result of self- regulatory code (Sinclair 1991). ? Creating consumer Advertisers usually focus on some repetitive themes such as contentment, youth, achievement, status, lavishness, fashion and attractiveness. As a result of this, Social Opposition and differences among the class get concealed and workplace conflicts are not revealed. Global campaigns propose that remedies for the human problems can be found in the individual consumption, which depicts a perfect channel for mass energies. Critical evaluation Critical evaluation of the above paragraph states that Consumer democracy serves as a substitute for establishing political democracy. The transformation in the U. S.Pepsi ad campaign, for use in Brazil, which was Join the Pepsi Revolution describes that numerous people are left with no other alternative for expressing their requirement for social modification. The only viable option includes changing the brands a nd enhancing their consumption. Globalization has caused an increase in the transnational advertising and it is one of significant reasons for the enlargement of transnational culture and collapse of traditional cultures. In French or English, the foreign lifestyles of a blond jetsetter are related with the Western products and agree a sign of modernity. Not only this, they in any case believe that the elements, which are modern, are superior. On the other hand, traditional elements are absolutely unpleasant. Thus, it will not be wrong to say that transnational advertising and globalization strive towards the removal of local cultural variations. The strategy of global marketing is highly effective as it rarely requires conscious subversion. The message, which states that we will sell you a culture, has greatly accounted in the global advertising campaign that acts as a fact advertising message utilized in all the countries. The reason behind an increase in preference of worldwide advertising is that it is extremely economical and more effective despite of the fact that it may wildly clash with the local environment (Stravens 1996). Virtue of respect This is another major issue which represents relationship between transnational advertising, globalization and local cultures. The process of globalization involves principles and motivation of people. Therefore, it is necessary to make modifications in the global strategy and specific marketing concepts must be directed towards the identified groups.Critical evaluation Critical evaluation of the above stated paragraph reveals that the virtue of respect can be protected from the excerpt of foreign culture, if the government takes effective measures to make this fact clear that although they might spend a penny an global outlook, yet traditional values will also be given due consideration. The government of capital of Singapore has done it effectively. Here, government formulated a list depicting good and bad as pects of the Asian and western values. This list assisted in the adoption of good systems from both the Asian and western values. In Singapore, it is very essential to understand the family for understanding the consumer behavior. This is so because family has a huge influence on making the decision related to the products purchasing and consumption (Stravens 1996). Economic management In order to maintain a smooth relation between transnational advertising, globalization and local cultures, it is necessary to focus on the aspect of economic management. Values can play both the positive and negative role depending on the developmental stage of a realm and extent of preference given to the Asian values. Not only this, global context is also very important. Critical evaluation From the above paragraph, it is clear that in a world where goods and services move freely across the national boundaries, Asian values can become a part of liability if they do not understand the significance o f transparency and accountability. For instance, Singapore is among the developing country that maintain a right blend between the Asian and western values. On the other hand, in South Korea, grouping of traditional and military cultures has led towards extreme dependence on enterprise system. As a result to this, issues like lack of transparency and failure in rationalizing the business structure have aroused (Sung-Joo 1999). Increase in the Decision makers Globalization and transnational advertisement has brought about a revolution in the decision making capability. Not only this, it has also increased the number of decision makers in a family (Restall 1997). Critical evaluation Globalization has led to formula of developed means of technologies for advertising in an effective manner. In a survey, it was found that children in Australia have greater access over the television and computer. This reflects that marketers should give due response to the kids as they also play a signifi cant role in decision making, especially in toys, games, fruit drinks and home PCs (Winton 1998). Not only this, globalization has reappeared as a rational projection of the digitalized revolution. Globalist theories are promoting the idea that people across the world can share widespread common culture (Watson 1997).The only aspect which an advisor should keep in mind that it should not hamper the local culture and must depict any vulgarity and sex. Dignity should be maintained epoch portraying a male or female in an advertisement. For instance, lee jeans (1987) depict two males and one female draped across bicycle. It is necessary to unloose the extent of openness in such advertisements (Wernick 1994). Conclusion From the above detailed discussion, I would conclude with the note that a close relationship exists between the transnational advertising, globalization and local cultures. In order to make the process of globalization successful, it is necessary for the leaders of the g lobalization to practice the virtues of esteem for religious and cultural values and also surrender their economic self-centeredness for the betterment of the people enduring poverty. This serves as a challenge in front of the world leaders to throw attention to the dimensions linked with the religious and cultural aspects. Globalization portrays a culture of global mass, which is influenced by the contemporary means of cultural production such as Internet, movies, TV, advertising etc.Developing countries are required to understand the significance of globalization. A right blending of Asian and western values is required to mount the benefit of globalization. On the other hand, globalization and transnational advertising should not hamper the local culture, which can be done by effective formulation of rules and regulations by the government.References A.
